Teaching With a Twist

About

About Me

Cherly MacLean

Hello! My name is Cheryl MacLean. I have had the incredible privilege to teach children for the past 21 years as they have become active members of our community. I have personally seen the impact Covid has had on children's math and language skills, and students are needing tutoring now more than ever before. A recent article in The New York Times shows evidence that the pandemic has set back math and language national scores by two decades. Evidence shows that tutoring can help support your child's learning to fill in the gaps that the pandemic has created that is no fault of your child or their teachers.

Why choose me to work with your child?

I currently teach with the Waterloo Region District School Board and have done so for over 5 years. I also taught at Kitchener-Waterloo Bilingual School for 15 years. I have also spent a year with the Halton District School Board.

I have experience teaching grades 1-7 and am qualified to teach Primary and Junior. I have my Math Specialist, Special Education Part 1, Reading Part 1, Teaching English Language Learners Part 1, and Integration of Information and Computer Technology Part 1, in addition to workshops and ongoing professional reading. Armed with a wealth of information from working with Junior students, I have taught students how to develop executive functioning skills and to learn not only how to organize their workspace, ChromeBooks, and homework, but to also organize their assignments to ensure they are staying on-track to complete them on time. In addition, I have extensive experience working with very young, hesitant, or English Language Learners who are learning how to embrace reading and writing, which has a direct correlation on how they are learn math, as well.

Please contact me to discuss how I can help your child build confidence in how they are doing at school.

Warmest regards,

Cheryl MacLean (OCT# 444428)

The Full Story

Achieve to Succeed Tutoring

As a company, Achieve to Succeed Tutoring Inc. endeavours to help students become the best versions of themselves in school by providing focused tutoring sessions that will best meet the needs of each child and provide them with tools, such as checklists, to use in their learning and review in class that are practical and actually useful for them. All students will have access to their own personalized Achieve to Succeed Tutoring Inc. Google Classroom that will provide them with review for an upcoming test, math choice boards, online reading access, etc, depending on the program I have set-up for your child. Overall, my goal is that every child develops a growth mindset and understands that learning takes time and will make many mistakes before they will get it right, and building a strong foundation will help each child to know they will get there with practice and confidence. I will be there to guide them each step of the way

For students with ADHD, I am also proud to provide training on how to develop Executive Functioning Skills to learn how to use a ChromeBook properly by utilizing their school account, if wanted, or setting up a new account, so that each student will feel organized and self-assured when accessing their files at school. They will also learn how to confidently use each of the applications that students regularly are asked to use in their classroom and will be provided with laminated ‘cheat sheets’ that they will be able to keep in their planners, binders, or backpack in class for quick reference. We will also look at how to organize everyday activities for school, as well, to look for ways to streamline daily tasks outside of their ChromeBook such as planners, assignments, and daily work.

I hope to hear from you so we can set-up a free 20-minute virtual meeting to discuss what you are hoping your child will achieve from tutoring. At that point, we will arrange a 90 minute assessment of your child to see where their current skills are so we can create a program to meet the needs of your child properly.

Parent and Student Testimonials

"I have had the pleasure of working with Cheryl as a colleague and her elementary school principal.

I can say with full confidence that Cheryl will go above and beyond in this role as she has always had commitment to individual student success, and dedication to meeting individual needs as the foundation for working with children. Accommodating and adjusting her instruction to fit for what the individual needs is  simply who she is.

Allowing her to do so is her expertise in building relationships and developing respect and trust with the students in her care. She fully understands and exercises the adage that “students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

And finally, tying together some of her strongest attributes, is her passion for students requiring additional assistance. Cheryl recognizes ALL student exceptionalities, and embraces the students’ uniqueness and uses their interests and strengths to build upon the areas requiring extra attention and support.

Her experience, combined with her passion for making a difference in the lives of children, make her ideal for this role. I highly recommend Cheryl in any educational capacity, but working one-on-one and in small group tutoring sessions to provide gap closing and extra support interventions is her comfort zone.”

Classroom Set-Up

I understand that every student has different needs, and I focus on the needs of the individual student. Sessions are planned with a specific focus and weekly continuity is always best for your child to see growth. I will start by assessing your child to see their specific needs and skills and plan their tutoring accordingly.

In Mathematics, I will focus on the mathematics Long Range Plans and will help equip your child so they are prepared for what they are learning in class. I will also help your child review for upcoming tests.

In Reading, I will help your child develop skills that best suit your child's specific needs. This includes learning reading basics, understanding how to respond to reading, learning how to read different texts, and more!

In Writing, I will help your child study the writing process, grammar skills, spelling, and other areas.

All other subject areas can be reviewed with students, and time can be given to go over homework questions during each session.

My 'Teaching With A Twist' methodology is that I also provide your child with various resources to use after the session is over as a reference.
